Sarah’s McQueen

If fashion was my (rather pagan) religion then Lee Alexander McQueen would have been the god of gods. The reason why I so worshipped his vision was that he was an artist in a field of designers. Even now, writing this, I cannot help but mourn for his loss. But fashion being fashion, the show never stops and the seasons are still moving forward.
It’s been very interesting to see how Sarah Burton has steered the Alexander McQueen brand. The 2011 Resort collection seemed like a little afterthought or story that the late Alexander McQueen had left behind but the 2011 Spring collection is definitely infused with something very different but familiar. Just like Lagerfeld’s Chanel, the Spring collection was definitely Sarah Burton’s McQueen.
Just as Sarah Burton has stated, there is no way that she could pretend to be McQueen but she has been with him and with the brand for so long that she too is part of it. If McQueen was the parent of the brand then Sarah was definitely the aunt. The prints and the shapes in the Spring collection has Alexander McQueen stamped all over them, but there is a much softer quality to the designs – more flowing, more carefree and slightly less theatrical and electric. Whilst McQueen cast his women from a male eye, Sarah’s McQueen has a much more feminine origin.
I doubt than any of us can ever forget Lee Alexander McQueen’s influence, but I am excited for the brand and its future direction.
